Wheelchairs for Kids Enters a New Era

Wheelchairs for Kids  is now taking into consideration not only the environmental factors found in many remote areas, but also the important medical needs of our recipients. The World Health Organisation has for some years carried out a detailed investigation into the wheelchairs supplied by the many charitable organisations and has found many shortcomings in suitability, durability and distribution methods.

Upcoming and recent shipments

In May, 2010, six of the new wheelchair models ( Model 9 ) were taken to the island of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu by Dr. Janet Richmond, Lecturer at Edith Cowan University, and Lois Moir an Occupational Therapist. Below is a brief summary of her report on the distribution of the wheelchairs:

" We discovered a significant need for postural support seating for some children on this island that the new design wheelchair was able to meet. We fitted children who needed mobility and postural support and the wheelchairs were able to provide both these needs.

One child has a scoliosis, a sideway curve of the spine, and the wheelchair was able to provide the additional support she required.

Another child has very low tone ( is very floppy ) and needed the wheelchair seat to be tilted backward to enable him to sit without falling forward - again the wheelchair has these required modifications. He was also short, being only 5 years old, and the wheelchair seat length as well as the footplate height could be adapted adequately to meet his needs."
